Helsinki, Finland, 25-27 April 2018.

The workshop is about developing existing peatland models to better answer the questions related to climate-friendly peatland management for, e.g., food production and forestry. The aim is to bring together experts on modelling of peatland processes, observations of GHG and water vapor fluxes at peatland-atmosphere interface and peatland utilization for food and wood production, discussing and learning from methodologies applied in peatland, hydrology, forestry and climate research. We are looking for joint brainstorming and for sharing of ideas, modelling tools and data and discussion on future collaboration.

The workshop is organized by Strategic Research Council research project SOMPA, dedicated to finding ways to develop ecologically and economically sustainable climate change mitigation options for forest and cropland management, to improve the basic understanding of peatland processes and hydrology, and to producing new scientific knowledge on drivers for soil methane and CO₂ emissions on peat soils. SOMPA aims to compare and further apply the best approaches in process modelling for practical applications.

The workshop Location is Kumpula, the Kumpula campus of the University of Helsinki and the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
