WP2 concentrates on the primary production of alternative protein sources from multiple origins. Primary production forms the basis of protein self sufficiency and generates business opportunities in rural areas but also in processing and retail.
WP2 covers diversification of crop production and takes new insights into aquaculture and fisheries. Novel aspects of primary production are covered in utilizing insects and cultivated mushrooms, and potential of green biorefineries to produce novel feed products from grass is considered.
We focus on both feed and food products as they both are important in improving protein self-sufficiency. The wide variety of novel feed materials is analysed and the information is compiled into Feed Tables to help utilizing them in rationing balanced diets for livestock (www.luke.fi/feedtables).
