Frequently asked questions

How can I get started?

First, open the biomass menu by clicking “Biomassat” (Biomasses) in the top left corner. Next, tick the biomass fractions you want in the menu that opens. For more information about each fraction, click on the “i” icon. Then, select the calculation area by clicking on one of the three icons below where it says “Aluevalinta” (Select Area). You can make calculations over a freely drawn area or over a pre-defined area, or by adding a centre point around which biomass is calculated.

Can I select biomasses under a single header without ticking each fraction separately in the “Biomassat” (Biomasses) menu?

By ticking the small box above the fraction-specific checkboxes, you can select all fractions under a single header. You can deselect all the biomasses in a row in the same way.

How can I deselect biomass fractions?

You can deselect all of them by unticking the box in the top-right corner of the “Biomassat” (Biomasses) menu. Furthermore, you can deselect individual biomasses by unticking specific checkboxes and groups of biomasses by unticking the box above or to the left of the group.

Can I calculate the amount of biomasses over a specific radius around a location I have selected (e.g. an industrial facility)?

By selecting the round icon on the extreme right below where it says “Aluevalinnat” (Selected areas) text, you can click on a specific location in the background map to select it as a calculation centre point. In the menu that opens, you can enter the radius you want. You can also select whether the distance is calculated over a straight line or via roads (when calculated via roads, the maximum distance is 65 kilometres).

How can I increase the visibility of the background map underneath selected biomasses?

In the “Taustakartat” (Background maps) menu, you can increase the visibility of the background map by unticking and re-ticking the checkbox below where it says “Taustakartta” (Background map). You can change the order of map layers in the “Valitut tasot” (Selected layers) window by dragging them up or down in the menu using the mouse.

How can I calculate biomass per municipality or over other pre-defined areas?

By selecting the icon in the middle below where it says “Aluevalinnat” (Selected areas), you can select pre-defined areas, such as municipal boundaries, catchment areas or ELY Centre areas. You can also add specific municipalities to your calculation by clicking on them in the map.

How can I get more information about biomass fractions?

The “Biomassat” (Biomasses), “Valitut tasot” (Selected layers) and “Karttaselitteet” (Legend) menus include “i” icons related to the material. Click on these to view more information about biomass fractions.

When I’m searching for side-stream information in the Biomass Atlas, small-sized tree harvesting results are presented in three different versions (stems, whole trees and integrated). Do I need to add these figures together to get the total amount, or are these alternative results that I need to examine one figure at a time?

Potentials are alternatives. If you want to compare actual harvesting volumes with the volume that harvesting instructions allow, select “Kokopuu” (Whole trees).

What do “lanta eläinsuojasta” and “lanta varastosta” mean? If I select all, the figure shown is much higher than the annual volume of manure estimated based on the number of animals in the municipality. Do I need to ignore these stocks when calculating the volume of annual manure?

“Lanta eläinsuojasta” (manure from animal housing) is the same manure as “lanta varastosta” (manure from stocks), but it is in different phases of its lifecycle. The Biomass Atlas offers two alternative figures because the properties of manure change when stored. If you are calculating the biogas production potential, select “lanta eläinsuojasta”. Do not use both, or the result will include double the manure volume.
